DAY 0 - THUR 9/18 - READY, SET, GO!

Well it's the day of departure, we're all packed (maiden voyage for our new valises, so still adjusting to them), and we're waiting for the limo to take is to JFK.

Earlier this morning I woke up to an email from Heidi, our friend in Aachen where we will stay on the first leg of our journey...I got nervous...don't like last minute calls.

I had asked her a while ago if there was anything special they would like from the States that they can't get there, and she replied No.  So this morning it was an urgent plea from Heidi for some Midol for her daughter (I guess it's better than what they have there).  Phew, I was relieved that it was nothing serious!

So when Marty went out this morning to do some last minute errands, he said he could stop at the pharmacy to pick up this Midol and save me a trip.  When he got there, the Pharmacist said they had only one box left with 24 tablets, and more coming tomorrow.  He said we were leaving today for a long trip, so he'd take whatever she had.  She assured him, in all seriousness, that one box should last you.  But, she looked at him and said "make sure you take no more the 6 tablets in one day".  He replied he'd be sure to remember that, paid for the box, and was on his merry way... Mission accomplished!

We had a big chuckle about that... neither one of us needs Midol any more, but the interchange was good medicine for us when you're tense before a trip.

The good news:  Almost no traffic on the ride to Kennedy.
The bad news:  Check-in didn't go so smoothly.  Since our new suitcases are heavier than the suitcases we loved but finally had to retire after 30 years of world travel, Marty's bag was 4 kilos over the allowance and would cost another $135. We were both upset, and it would be virtually impossible to take 4 kilos of stuff out and put it in our carry-ons.  I don't know if it was the looks on our faces, or the check-in agent saw that we were seniors, or what, but she actually waived the entire extra fee and put our bags through.  I guess we lucked out, seniors or not, and now we were relieved and happy campers.

We then grabbed a bite at Bobby Van's... very civilized and relaxing... and we're waiting at the gate.

Now it's getting exciting!  Next stop Dusseldorf...
